Review: Reboot by Amy Tintera

Reboot (Reboot, #1)Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

My thoughts...

Reboots or you may call them the perfect soldiers are ranked by how long it takes them to revive. Wren Connolly took 178 minutes to revive. The longer you revive the stronger and less emotional you become. Wren was feared by everyone, but she was also quite popular for her brutal attacks and for her cold personality. Her favorite hobby is training the newbies/ fresh reboots. She had her eyes on a new troublemaker, Callum. He's a 22 the lowest rank she's ever met. Callum maybe more humane than her, but Wren thinks it's a lost for him. He's weak and that's won't help him survive. In other words his humanity will get him killed. When it was his time to be eliminated Wren can't find herself without Callum by her side. She has never felt so alive. She even smiled and laughed at his corny jokes.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

The story started powerful, but then that certain strength did not keep me reading. It took me 3 days to finish Reboot, but not for the reason that you think. The story was just very dragging. The concept and premises were all polished well, but the protagonist wasn't as strong as the others. Her traits were supposed to be robotic-ish, loyal and maybe cool, but she wasn't. She was supposed to be the perfect soldier, but Amy Tintera lacked more details about Wren. I wanted to know more about the main character. It was very difficult to connect with Wren because it was also in first person. The advantage of writing Reboot in first person was I could actually read the humanity left in Wren. That was the good part of the writing style. But I needed more. Wren's life in Reboot was left a mystery. She was just the perfect soldier. I wish the author could have written something else other than their training

I did enjoy some of there hilarious moments. Some of the best scenes in the story were the brutal ones. I just love the blood and pain...that doesn't sound right. *Thinks of flowers and butterflies* Amy Tintera's writing was more suitable to the action. The romance was the weak part. Part of me thought it was a bit instalove and part of me didn't. This is not a spoiler, but I think the last few chapters of the story should be less kissing and more kicking. The weird thing about Wren was suddenly she had her humanity back in a snap. I felt like the author was pushing her characters too fast. What I really loved about Wren was her cold personality. It's an original trait since most of the female character are all Kyaaa-Kyaaa-Kyaaa, Oh Gosh a spider! I loved everything about Wren except for her relationship with Callum. In my eyes I don't think Callum showed much affection, but when I see both characters interact it was more of friendship than romance. Maybe I misread it

I still enjoyed the story no matter how strongly awful some scenes were. I'm sure a lot of readers will enjoy this action packed series. The story wasn't perfect, but I liked it enough to rank it with 3 stars
