Review + Interview: Persistence of Vision Blog Tour

About the author

You may find/contact her here:
I am a fiction writer that writes across three genres: scifi/fantasy, crime drama, and historical fiction. This blog is dedicated to all things fantastical. I especially love dystopia and high fantasy, but I explore all kinds of things that fall within the realm of fantasy.

I am single and live in northern Utah with two of my sisters and my 2-year-old niece. I come from a tight-knit family of fourteen. That's right! Twelve kids, all from the same two parents. Everybody breathe. It's all okay. Promise.

I'm very close to my parents and siblings. As you can imagine, our family get-togethers are a bit, um, ridiculously chaotic. But that's okay because we always have fun.

I love to read, as you might imagine. My other hobbies include cooking, playing the piano, and watching TV with my sisters.

Favorite TV shows: Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Grey's Anatomy, Vampire Diaries, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Walking Dead, Copper, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Fringe, Blue Bloods.

Favorite Books: Too many to name! Heart of Darkness, Book of Mormon, Old Testament, pretty much any well-written high fantasy novel, for a few.

I love reading, writing, story-telling, and dark chocolate. Bring on the over-analyzing, flawed characters, over-the-top drama, and fantasy worlds! :D

About the book

Title: Persistence of Vision (#1 INTERCHRON)
Author: Liesel K. Hill
Pages:386
Format: Paperback
Source: Author
Genre: Dystopian, New Adult, Romance, Action, Fantasy etc

In a world where collective hives are enslaving the population and individuals have been hunted to the verge of extinction, Maggie Harper, and independent 21st Century woman, must find the strength to preserve the freedom of the future, but without the aid of her memories.

After experiencing a traumatic time loss, Maggie is plagued by a barrage of images she can't explain. When she's attacked by a creep with a spider's web tattoo, she is saved by Marcus, a man she's never met, but somehow remembers. He tells her that both he and her creepy attacker are from a future in which individuals are being murdered by collectives, and Marcus is part of the rebellion. The collectives have acquired time travel and they plan to enslave the human race throughout all of history. The flashes Maggie has been seeing are echoes of lost memories, and the information buried deep within them is instrumental in defeating the collective hives.

In order to preserve the individuality of mankind, Maggie must try to re-discover stolen memories, re-kindle friendships she has no recollection of, and wade through her feelings for the mysterious Marcus, all while dodging the tattooed assassins the collectives keep sending her way.

If Maggie can't fill the holes in her memory and find the answers to stop the collectives, the world both in her time and in all ages past and future will be doomed to enslavement in the grey, mediocre collectives. As the danger swirls around her and the collectives close in, Maggie realizes she must make a choice: stand out or fade away...

Interview

1. Where did you get the idea of becoming an author?

I’ve always been off in my own head, making up stories. I had a teacher tell my mom when I was in grade school that she thought I was capable of writing a book. Ever since then, I’ve thought about doing it, but I usually thought of it as a side project, rather than my main career. It wasn’t until college that I really got it all figured out.

2. What inspired you to write your first novel, Persistence of Vision?

It was a combination of things. The beginning incident, when Maggie and her brother lose time in Vegas, is based on a true story. Something similar happened to my sister’s old co-worker. She and her husband were on the Strip and stopped for a mixed drink that they didn’t watch be mixed. They woke up the next day in a strange hotel room. (Crazy, huh?) My imagination just took off with that. I also took a literary science fiction class my final semester of college. I took a lot of inspiration from that as well.

3. Who's your favorite character in your story?

I love them all way too much to have one favorite. I love them all equally! ;D

4. Who is your role-model? (Can be an author or a friend)

I have tons of role models! My dad is totally my hero! I have such forward-looking, positive siblings that I look up to. My writing idol is the late Robert Jordan. Take your pick! ;D

5. What is your worst fear?

Loss, I think. I’m not a very neurotic person. There’s not much that scares me. (Okay, technically I have mild claustrophobia, but I don’t think that’s what you mean.) Not being able to protect my family is what scares me most.

6. If you were to have a book signing where would you want it to be?

I actually have several scheduled in Utah! (See my site: http://interchron.tateauthor.com/) If I could choose a farther-away place, I’d like to do one at a big convention in New York, such as BEA. That’d be tons of fun! :D

7. Who's your favorite author?

There are so many great authors out there! It’s hard to pick one favorite. However, I often say that it’s Robert Jordan. I started reading his epic fantasy series in high school (the final book just came out this month) and I’ve learned more about story-telling, great characters, compelling story arcs, and writing style from reading that series than most other things I’ve read combined. The man is brilliant!

8. What type of genre do you usually enjoy?

Most types. I especially like epic stories so high fantasy and multi-generational historical fiction are among my favorites. I’m also fascinated with serial killers, so I read some crime, though I’ll admit to reading more true crime than crime drama.

9. If you could be any person you want to be who'd you pick? Superman? Batman? My mom? (JWK)

Anyone, huh? How about Hermione? She gets to live in the wizarding world, be Harry Potter’s best friend, and help defeat Voldemort. Not too shabby for a fellow bookworm. :D

10. What is your favorite book/s?

Again, the Wheel of Time series is on top. I’m also really into George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series (more epic fantasy) and I read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness at least once a year. It’s one you can think about/discuss endlessly.

11. What's your favorite color?

Cerulean blue.

12. Will you be writing something else sooner or later?

Oh yes. I’m currently working on several projects, including Book 2 of Interchron which I’m tentatively calling Quantum Entanglement. I also have a historical fiction entitled Citadels of Fire out courtesy of Jolly Fish Press later this year.

13. Do you enjoy writing or receiving lovely reviews?

I enjoy both of course! :D But it’s more important to write what you love and not worry about negative or mediocre reviews. Because writing is so subjective, you aren’t going to get one hundred percent glowing reviews. That would be unnatural. So I don’t worry about it. I write what I love and make it the best it can be. Great reviews are just icing on the cake.

14. Girly type or sporty type?

I’m a bit of both. Girly, for the most part, but I enjoy exercise and sports, especially when I get to play with my brothers.

15. Any resolutions you want to share to your fellow bloggers/fans/friends/readers?

I did a whole resolution post on my blog. You can view it here: http://musingsonfantasia.blogspot.com/2012/12/welcome-to-2013-one-day-early.html. The thing about me is that I tend to be overly ambitious in my resolutions. Because of that, chances are I won’t hit all of them, but that’s okay with me. Even if I only achieve fifty percent of what I set out to, that will still be a productive year.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog tour, folks! I appreciate it! And thanks to Chyna for hosting me! Happy Friday! :D

Review

When I got the opportunity to review Persistence of Vision, I did not hesitate to accept Liesel's request. It took me a few days to finish reading PoV because my TBR pile has been rising since I've started this blog. When I finally had the time to read PoV I wanted to stop reading for a while because the plot was well...it was interesting, but I didn't enjoy the sudden burst of information.

When I read the summary, it did what the author wanted to do to a reader. It made me want to grab my own copy. After turning a few pages, the story was filled with holes that hasn't been answered yet, but when I finally got to the chapter where I would finally understand what the whole plot was about, I couldn't catch up. For me I would have liked the book more if the author wrote bits of information then just let her readers catch the flow.

Let's talk about the plot. We run into a confused girl named, Maggie. She blacked out in a bar with her brother and having no clue at all to what just happened. They found themselves in a hotel with no memories of how they got there. While Maggie was alone in her house, she suddenly gets attacked by a man she never met. The only clue she had was that the attacker had a spider web tattoo on his left eye. She was saved by another man she seemed to recognize. She feels a memory coming to her head and that there was more to this mysterious savior that meets the eye.

She ends up dragging herself into an otherworldly war. Maggie learns more about herself and her sudden flashbacks or you may call it memories that she's been having for a year. It turns out she's more powerful than she thought. She resides in a place called Interchron with Marcus(Her savior) where she met her new friends, you may call them her second family. Then she finds out that her savior is someone from her past. Now Maggie just dragged herself into more trouble, turns out she's part of  the Prophecy that will save humanity. With her attraction to her savior and her new found friends and don't forget her responsibility, how in the world will she balance them all?!?!

This time I'll be talking about the characters. Maggie is the protagonist in the story, she's a girl who lacked charisma. She's the character who questioned many things. At the start of the story I wasn't connecting with the character yet but as she progressed I became one with Maggie. She's an extraordinary girl who has many potentials. She's brave, trustworthy, loving, sensitive and understanding. What I really loved about her was how understanding she was. She could read people easily, but for me she was a bit paranoid. I can't blame her since she lost her memories, of course she would be anxious about who or what she is. Curiosity killed the cat. Just kidding!

Marcus, is the savior. The author didn't put enough descriptions on how he looked like so I can't really explain his physical appearance. But I think to Maggie, he's smokin hot! LOL ;) Marcus is somewhat like a prince, he doesn't think for himself. He's not selfish, he's more generous that he thinks he is. Under all that facade he's actually a heartbroken angel. He yearns for Maggie to remember him. I kinda wanted to cry that she has no clue about what her relationship was with Marcus. *No spoilers* I really LOVE Marcus! He's super sweet and adorable. A bit cheesy but cute. :))

I also want to talk about Karl, eventhough he's only a minor character in the story he stands out alot to me. He's hilarious! Without him the story would have no comedy. Every book has to make their readers laugh sometimes. Liesel did a great job making her readers laugh. I'm really impressed. There aren't many authors who write funny books anymore like Rick Riordan's or Cassie Clare's. :(

About Doc, he the smart guy, the alfa, the leader and the source of knowledge. He leads his team and teaches Maggie all she needs to know. Once you meet Doc in the story you would think...hmmm...this guy seems nice, but NO! Under that smile holds many secrets. *Mwuahahaha*

The author's way of writing put a smooth tone that echoed behind it. She added descriptions that makes our imagination work. She used the right words to describe the emotions, setting and characters well, but some were a bit overused. She also added science and commonsense to it so it made me go like "Woah-Cool-WOOOOOW" The plot was well done and the ending was calming. It wasn't much of a cliffhanger but it does make me want to read the next book. :) She did a great job and I'm sure many adults will enjoy this series. :D
